Breaking Free from Cults and Coercive Control

27 August 2025

At Birch Foundation, we understand how devastating cult involvement can be. Our founder and director, Shone Benjamin, experienced first-hand the reality of being caught in a small religious cult on the Gold Coast between 2019 and 2022. During this time, he was subjected to coercive control, stripped of independence, and ultimately left homeless after escaping. This personal journey has shaped our mission to help people who are rebuilding their lives after coercive control, abuse, or hardship.

What is a Cult?

Cults often present themselves as supportive communities or spiritual groups, but behind the scenes, they may use manipulation and coercive control to dominate members. Cult leaders and groups typically demand unquestioning loyalty, cut people off from family and friends, and create an environment of fear and dependency.

Signs You May Be in a Cult

While every group looks different, common warning signs include:

  • Isolation — being encouraged to distance yourself from family, friends, or outside influences.
  • Financial control — pressure to give money, assets, or work for free.
  • Rigid rules — strict demands about where you live, who you speak to, or how you behave.
  • Loss of independence — decisions about your career, relationships, or personal choices are made by the group or its leader.
  • Fear and guilt — being told you will face punishment, shame, or rejection if you leave.

If these signs feel familiar, know that you are not alone, and there is help available.

Where to Get Immediate Help

If you or someone you know is currently experiencing cult involvement or coercive control: Queensland Police: Call 131 444 (or 000 in an emergency). DVConnect Women’s Line: 1800 811 811. DVConnect Men’s Line: 1800 600 636.

How Birch Foundation Can Support You

While Birch Foundation cannot intervene directly in cult-related matters, we can:

  • Provide free essentials such as clothing, food, toiletries, and care packages through our op shop and café.
  • Offer a safe, welcoming environment where you can take the first steps toward rebuilding your life.
  • Refer and recommend other organisations that provide specialist help for recovery, counselling, and legal support.

Leaving a cult or coercive environment can feel overwhelming, but it is possible to reclaim your freedom, independence, and future. Our founder’s experience of escaping a cult, facing homelessness, and rebuilding from nothing is proof that recovery is possible — and support is out there.
